MINUTES

Monday, March 23, 2009

Present: Members: Chairman Phil Sweeney, Marcia Sweeney, Rose Ann McCarthy, Joyce Kennard, Jim Carrigan, Mary Cooney-Glazer, Lynn Nadeau, Rep. Lori Ehrlich, Joan Hanley, Ron Amon, Bob Landreth, Jean Landreth, Tim Bassett Guests: Sen. Thomas McGee, Michelle Gottlieb

Chairman Phil Sweeney reminded everyone to read minutes and other information on our website, i.e. marlbeheaddems.org. Many links to other (Democratic) websites are also listed. If you want to read the full Democratic platform, that is listed there as well. Meeting minutes have been e-mailed to members and mailed to those without computers. If you have not received them, please let Phil or Marcia know.

Treasurer Jennings was out of town. Phil informed members that we have $2,406.69 in our treasury. Please pay your dues if have not done so. ($15.00)

Phil reminded members of the upcoming state convention in Springfield on June 6, 2009.

Discussion ensued regarding the Goldberg Scholarship. We need to submit the recipient’s name by May 1. We will try to raise $50 – $100 donations and also may contribute out of our treasury funds. Phil will have a discussion with members of the Goldberg family and let us know any further information.

The members welcomed our two guest speakers, Rep. Lori Ehrlich and Senator Thomas McGee.

Sen. McGee briefed members on the many issues in which he is involved. They include: the stimulus bill, the state budget, transportation issues, public service, labor workforce development, state pensions, etc.

The most drastic of these is the condition of our transportation. He said that this issue has been a real struggle to try to solve. The MBTA is on the verge of collapse if it is not helped. Also, further discussion on this topic has been postponed until July 1.

Rep. Ehrlich updated us on all issues in which she is involved. She is a member of the House Transportation Committee and is also concerned about the state of Massachusetts transportation. Both Sen. McGee and Rep. Ehrlich are concerned about any toll increases which would unfairly burden residents of the North Shore. Unfortunately members outside of the Metro-Boston area do not share the concerns of those of us who rely on the metropolitan transportation systems.

Board of Health candidate Michelle Gottlieb spoke to the members. She has extensive public and environmental health background. She is supporting green and sustainable solutions to our environmental situations and problems. She has a Master’s degree in Environmental Health. She has also formed wellness committees and other collaborative community organizations in the area. She asked for our support and the members wished her well.

Members will be notified of the next meeting date.
