MDTC Scholarships

Each year the MDTC presents the Edwin L. and Selma L. Goldberg Scholarship to one or more members of the Marblehead High School graduating class to encourage civic engagement, interest in government and participation in the political process The MDTC would like to acknowledge the special donations made by the children and grandchildren of the Goldberg family, Nancy Steinberg, Judi Margolin, Adam Margolin and Jessica Margolin Fenton. By investing in our students, they hope to inspire a new generation and ensure the legacy of Edwin and Selma. Scholarships are also supported by proceeds from the Annual MDTC Picnic.

On the 40th Anniversary of the MDTC Goldberg Scholarships, we celebrate our 2021 Scholarship Recipients Mae Genovese, Dan Howells and Muriel Owen. In memory of Ann Cohen, beloved teacher, activist and lifetime member of the MDTC, we award the Ann Cohen Memorial Scholarship to Sophie Hauck.

Sophie Hauck - Ann Cohen Memorial Scholar

As Co-Chair of the Marblehead High School Democrats since 2019, Sophie has been a very active leader in all the group activities. To describe one particular achievement, Sophie conceptualized, organized, and moderated a virtual panel featuring Representative Ehrlich to inform the 50+ attendees about civic engagement. In addition to her activities in the MHS Dems, Sophie is president of the MHS environmental honor society, editor-in-chief of the Headlight student newspaper, the sole student representative for the Marblehead Schools Reopening Committee and Green Marblehead Committee, as well as one of two high-schoolers fulfilling the MHS Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Audit. An outstanding student, Sophie will be attending the UMass Amherst Honors College. In recognition for all her achievement, the committee would like to make this award in memory of Ann Cohen. Please join me in congratulating Sophie!

Mae Genovese - Edwin L. Goldberg and Selma L. Goldberg Scholar

As the current Co-Chair of the Marblehead High School Democrats and its first social media coordinator, Mae has led the group in election support, fundraising, educational outreach and political activism and has enjoyed all the personal connections made. During the past year she served as an intern for Angus McQuilkin’s campaign for the US Congress, learning the nitty gritty of campaigning and elections. Mae is an accomplished athlete, playing all four years for the Varsity Swim and Track & Field teams and serving as the captain for the JV soccer team her senior year. An outstanding student, she has earned high honors throughout her years at Marblehead High School. Mae will be attending Bucknell University to study accounting and hopes to pursue a career in accounting or finance.

Dan Howells - Edwin L. Goldberg and Selma L Goldberg Scholar

Dan is active in student government, elected as class president for all four years of high school. Additionally, he has been the student representative to the Marblehead School Committee for the last three years. At each televised meeting Dan presents school news, updates the committee on school activities, and answer questions about the thoughts and opinions of MHS students. While Daniel comes from a family of local elected officials and grew up surrounded by talk of solving issues in the community, his true passion is combining his musical interests and computer skills to do music and sound editing. He is also active in a capella and drama at the high school, winning several awards. An Eagle scout in Troop #79, Daniel will be attending Rutgers University and plans to study music and sound engineering.

An excellent student, Muriel is active in school and the community outside of the classroom, serving as a reporter for the Marblehead High School newspaper, being civically engaged as a member of the Marblehead High School Democrats Club, and volunteering as part of the National Green School Society as well as the Marblehead High School Interact Club. Muriel spent her junior year in Lucerne, Switzerland as a Rotary Youth Exchange student. She will be attending Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany and plans to study international business.
